The CEO of a Gurugram-based company shared a video of his conversation with a cab driver, during which both of them discussed income, self-employment and the role of gig workers in India's evolving economy.

The video was recorded by Akash Gupta, founder and CEO of Zypp Electric, during a cab ride. During the conversation, the driver said he had previously worked a salaried job, earning around Rs 25,000 a month. Gupta then asked whether he now earned around Rs 1 lakh. The driver smiled and indicated that the prospect of higher earnings was one of the reasons he had left his job.

Then, Gupta told the driver that he should view himself not simply as a cab driver but as an entrepreneur running his own business. He explained that the vehicle was effectively the driver's "shop" and that by spending around 10 hours a day working, he was able to earn roughly Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 daily and support his family.

"Tum pataa hai kya ho? Tum entrepreneur ho, jo apna kaam khud karta hai, apna startup khud chalaata hai (Do you know what you are? You are an entrepreneur, someone who works for himself and runs his own startup)," Gupta told the cab driver.

He also encouraged the driver to describe himself as a businessman rather than someone who merely drives a cab.

The driver agreed, saying he appreciated Gupta's perspective and considered the work his own business.

Gupta, thus, described gig workers as a new segment of India's middle class in the caption of his post.

"Bharat ka naya middle class - gig entrepreneur. This is why the gig economy matters. These aren’t just delivery partners. They’re micro-entrepreneurs building income on their own terms. This is the next middle class of Bharat," he wrote.

The video offered a glimpse into how some workers in the gig economy view self-employment, with the conversation highlighting the shift from traditional salaried jobs to income opportunities created through platform-based work.
