At over 18,000 feet in the freezing expanse of the Siachen Glacier, it wasn’t just Indian Army personnel striking yoga poses on International Yoga Day, their specially trained sniffer dogs, the “Siachen Sniffers,” stood alongside them on the world’s highest battlefield.

The rare sight unfolded on Sunday as soldiers of the Fire & Fury Corps observed International Yoga Day amid sub-zero temperatures, icy winds and vast stretches of snow. Against this unforgiving backdrop, handlers and their canine companions participated in yoga sessions that highlighted endurance, discipline and the unique bond forged in extreme operational conditions.

The “Siachen Sniffers,” trained for high-altitude search, rescue and detection missions, were seen calmly accompanying their handlers as they demonstrated yoga postures on the glacier. Their composure in the harsh terrain underscored their critical role in supporting Army operations in one of the most challenging environments on Earth.

Set against silent white peaks and thin air that tests human limits, the moment reflected an unusual but powerful harmony between soldiers and their four-legged teammates. The dogs, already accustomed to extreme conditions, moved in sync with their handlers, symbolising trust built through rigorous training and shared hardship.

The celebration also extended beyond Siachen, with troops across Ladakh marking the day in locations such as Pangong Tso, Galwan, Marsimik La, Durbuk, Tangtse and Karu. Despite freezing temperatures and difficult terrain, soldiers across these posts participated in yoga sessions to reinforce physical and mental well-being.
