Maharashtra cop carries 72-year-old woman on his shoulders during flood rescue

As relentless rain continued to batter Maharashtra, a police officer carried a 72-year-old woman on his shoulders through waist-deep floodwaters after a state-run bus got stranded at Sarasai in Raigad district. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus was carrying eight passengers, all of whom were rescued safely.

The rescue operation was carried out by personnel from the Rasayani Police, who were assisted by the Help Foundation after the bus got stuck in floodwaters.

Sharing details of the operation on X, Raigad Police wrote, "Prompt action by Rasayani Police helped rescue eight passengers after an ST bus became stranded in floodwaters at Sarasai. With assistance from the Help Foundation, the police safely evacuated all eight passengers, including a 72-year-old woman, demonstrating their commitment to duty."

Photographs shared by the police showed one officer carrying the elderly passenger on his shoulder while wading through waist-deep water to reach a safe location. The remaining passengers were also safely evacuated from the stranded bus.

The rescue comes as Maharashtra remains in the grip of an intense monsoon spell that has disrupted normal life across Mumbai, Pune and neighbouring districts. Days of heavy rainfall have triggered flooding, waterlogging and transport disruptions in several areas.

In Mumbai, schools and colleges were shut on Monday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert for heavy rain and strong winds, while authorities urged residents to avoid non-essential travel.
