A 33-year-old man from Mumbai has been arrested after he poured petrol on a public road in Goregaon and set it on fire to mark his age, simply as a birthday stunt for a social media reel.

The incident took place on Ram Mandir Road in Goregaon (West), where the accused, identified as Fahad Khalil Samshuddin Shaikh, traced out the number “33” on the road using petrol.

In the video that surfaced online, he was seen approaching the marking, lighting a cigarette first, and then using a lit matchstick to ignite the petrol trail. Within seconds, the number was engulfed in flames on the road.

The clip then also showed him casually getting into his car and driving away, leaving the burning patch behind on a public street, an act that officials said posed a serious risk to passersby and nearby property.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered at the Goregaon Police Station, the matter came to light after a complaint was received on April 25 around 11:10 pm via the official X handle of the Mumbai Police Commissioner. The complaint flagged a video in which the man was seen creating the fiery birthday display.

Acting swiftly, a beat marshal and police team reached the location and initiated an investigation. Authorities later confirmed that the incident had occurred earlier that day, around 12:05 pm, on a public road.

Police identified the accused as a local resident and car dealer. He was subsequently taken into custody, and a case was registered under Sections 287 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (related to negligent conduct with fire and acts endangering life or personal safety), based on a complaint.

Social media users were stunned by how a dramatic birthday celebration quickly escalated into a hazardous act, receiving criticism for risking public safety for the sake of online content. The use of petrol on an open road, especially in a populated urban area, raised concerns about the potential for the fire to spread or cause harm.

Officials warned that such stunts not only endangered the individual involved but also unsuspecting members of the public, including pedestrians and motorists passing through the area.
