A disturbing video from the Kanha Tiger Reserve has reignited concerns over plastic pollution after it showed a tiger chewing on a discarded plastic bottle deep inside its habitat.

The clip has sparked conversations about the growing threat that human waste poses to wildlife and fragile ecosystems.

Shared by Dr PM Dhakate on X and was filmed by wildlife photographer Anil Vohra. In the footage, the tiger can be seen curiously biting and chewing on a plastic bottle lying on the forest floor, an unsettling reminder that plastic waste has made its way into even some of India's most protected forests.

Sharing the clip, Dr Dhakate warned that the issue extends far beyond littering.

"In this video, a tiger chewing a plastic bottle shows how plastic pollution has breached core wildlife habitats. This is not simple litter; it is a threat to biodiversity," he wrote.

He went on to explain the scientific consequences of plastic pollution, noting that larger plastic waste can cause physical harm to animals, while microscopic plastic particles pose a long-term ecological risk.

"Data shows macro-plastics cause internal blockages, while microplastics contaminate the food chain from the soil up. Through biomagnification, these toxins accumulate inside apex predators, causing severe health issues," the caption read.

Dr Dhakate also highlighted the ecological importance of tigers, describing them as more than just charismatic wildlife.

"As apex predators, tigers anchor the food chain and sustain the entire ecological balance. To protect their habitats, we must remain mindful of plastic pollution and stop throwing waste into the wild," he urged.

The video has struck a chord with wildlife lovers and conservationists, many of whom described it as both heartbreaking and alarming.

Several users said the sight of a tiger interacting with a plastic bottle inside a protected reserve reflected the extent of human negligence, while others called for stricter enforcement against littering in and around national parks.

Many also echoed the message that protecting wildlife is not limited to conserving forests or preventing poaching, it also means ensuring that human waste does not infiltrate natural habitats. For many online, the clip served as a sobering reminder that even the country's most iconic predators are not immune to the consequences of plastic pollution.
