A quick photo stop in the mountains turned into a frightening moment for a group of tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Gurez after their parked car suddenly started rolling backwards down a steep slope and eventually plunged into a gorge.

The incident was captured in a video shared on X by user Nikhil Saini, showing a white car moving uncontrollably downhill moments after the tourists had stepped out of the vehicle.

In the clip, the car was seen parked on a sloped stretch of road in the scenic Gurez Valley. Moments later, the vehicle appeared to lose balance and began rolling backwards at speed.

The tourists, who were standing nearby, immediately realised what was happening and could be seen running behind the moving car in an attempt to stop it.

However, the vehicle continued gaining momentum as it travelled down the slope before crashing and falling into the gorge below. The tourists were left watching from a distance as the car disappeared down the hillside.

Sharing the video, Saini emphasised the importance of basic safety precautions while parking on mountain roads. His caption read, “A small stone behind your tyres can literally save your car. And please, use some common sense. If a spot looks risky, don’t park there just for a photo.”

He added that the video was from Gurez, Jammu and Kashmir, and showed the car rolling into the gorge shortly after the tourists stepped out for pictures.

The video left viewers alarmed, with many pointing out how quickly a seemingly harmless stop in the mountains could turn dangerous.

Several users suggested that the vehicle may not have been properly secured, with one commenter saying it appeared the handbrake might not have been engaged.

Others stressed that parking on steep slopes requires extra caution, including leaving the vehicle in gear, turning the wheels appropriately and using wheel chocks or stones when needed.

“Looks very scary,” one user commented, while another criticised the lack of caution among some tourists driving in hilly regions, writing that people taking cars into the mountains often fail to learn basic safety practices.

The incident also sparked a wider discussion around tourist behaviour in hill destinations, where scenic viewpoints often tempt visitors to stop at unsafe spots for photographs. Many users said that while capturing memories is common during mountain trips, safety should take priority over finding the perfect picture.
