A viral video of a woman casually tossing peanut shells under her seat and washing her hands inside the compartment has prompted many to ask whether India's cleanliness challenge begins with its commuters.

Shared widely on X, the clip has prompted many to question whether dirty trains are always the result of poor maintenance or the behaviour of passengers themselves.

The video, recorded by a fellow traveller, shows a woman seated near the compartment door eating peanuts and repeatedly throwing the shells and other leftovers under her seat instead of using the nearby dustbin. She is also seen washing her hands while remaining seated, letting the water spill onto the compartment floor rather than walking a few steps to the wash basin.

According to the person who filmed the incident, the behaviour continued for the entire five-hour journey. In the caption accompanying the post, the user admitted wanting to confront the passenger but ultimately chose not to.

“Passenger next to my seat spent the whole 5 hour train journey eating and throwing all the leftovers under the seat. Dustbin was right outside,” the caption read.

The user added that while they wanted to teach the passenger a lesson in civic sense, they decided against it, fearing the situation could escalate into a confrontation. “You can't change the whole country. If you confront these people, they won't learn or acknowledge their mistake. Instead, they'll start a fight and can turn violent,” the post continued.

Another viral post sharing the clip criticised the passenger's conduct, arguing that not all dirty trains can be blamed on the authorities. The caption also alleged that the woman spent the night watching reels at full volume, disturbing fellow passengers.

The video has sparked widespread debate online, with many agreeing that public spaces remain clean only when those using them take equal responsibility. Others echoed the uploader's concern, saying that while such behaviour deserves to be called out, many people hesitate to intervene for fear of arguments or hostility.
