A conversation between a Gurugram-based CEO and the security guard at his office has gone viral after the executive joked that he had “poached” his own employee by encouraging him to switch to a better-paying role within the company’s ecosystem.

During the conversation, the security guard told Gupta that he had joined Zypp around two months ago and currently earns about Rs 18,000 a month. When Gupta mentioned that delivery workers often earn more, the employee admitted he had already been considering switching roles.

Saying the current job no longer felt worthwhile, the guard explained that he was thinking of buying a vehicle and moving into delivery work, where he believed earnings were significantly higher. “12 ghante denge wahan toh Rs 1500-1600 ho jayega din ka (If I put in 12 hours there, I could earn Rs 1,500-1,600 a day),” he said, comparing it to his current daily earnings of roughly Rs 600 for similar working hours.

Gupta agreed that delivery partners could earn around Rs 40,000-50,000 a month, though he pointed out that the job involved far more physical effort. Rather than discouraging the move, he encouraged the employee to give it a shot, assuring him there would be no issue since both roles existed within the company’s ecosystem.

In the caption of his post, Gupta wrote, “Oops, I poached my own employee in my business,” using the interaction to reflect on opportunities within India’s growing gig economy.

“Sometimes all it takes is one conversation to open up a new possibility,” he said, adding that the employee’s reaction to learning about delivery earnings was not disbelief but curiosity.

Gupta concluded by describing the exchange as a reminder of how new opportunities often begin with a simple thought: “Maybe, I can do that too.”

Earlier this month, Akash Gupta had also made headlines after sharing a video of a conversation with a cab driver, in which the two discussed income, self-employment and the growing role of gig workers in India’s evolving economy.
