India, China discuss trade and people ties in Doraiswami's first top meeting

Indian Ambassador Vikram Doraiswami held his first vice ministerial-level meeting in Beijing with Hua Chunying. The talks signalled a push to stabilise ties and widen cooperation before India's BRICS summit.

Indian Ambassador to China Vikram Doraiswami held his introductory meeting with China’s Vice Foreign Minister Hua Chunying in Beijing on Monday, with the two sides discussing ways to expand bilateral cooperation in trade, the economy and people-to-people exchanges. The Indian Embassy said they also agreed to work towards stable and mutually beneficial relations.

The embassy said Doraiswami also welcomed Hua’s assurance of China’s support for India’s BRICS Presidency. India holds the rotating presidency of BRICS and is expected to host the summit of the 10-member bloc later this year.

In a post on X on Tuesday, the embassy said, “Both sides agreed to strengthen efforts to fully implement the vision of the leaders of the two countries for stable and mutually beneficial relations that deliver tangible benefits to the peoples of both countries.” It added, “They also exchanged views on further expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, economy, and people-to-people exchanges.”

On Monday, Doraiswami also met Fu Ying, former Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Founding President of the Centre for International Security and Strategy. According to the embassy, “They shared views on contemporary bilateral, regional, and global developments and its impacts.” It said the discussions also focused on academic and think tank exchanges.

Doraiswami’s meeting with Hua was his first with a vice ministerial-level official in the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Since taking over as India’s envoy in May, he has been meeting officials from the foreign and commerce ministries to discuss steps to improve relations. He also visited Tibet to meet officials about the arrangements made for Indian pilgrims taking part in the Kailash and Manasarovar Yatra.

The meetings marked Doraiswami’s latest engagements in China, with discussions focused on implementing the leaders’ vision for bilateral ties, expanding cooperation in key areas and reviewing people-to-people links.
