Jaishankar, Qatar PM review energy, trade and West Asia situation

S Jaishankar met Qatar Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani to review cooperation and regional developments. The talks highlighted India's push to deepen Gulf ties amid a shifting West Asia landscape.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Qatar Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani on Sunday and reviewed key areas of bilateral cooperation, including energy, trade, investments, connectivity and security. The two leaders also discussed the West Asia conflict and its impact.

Jaishankar is on a visit to Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman from July 5 to 10. The trip comes amid fast-changing political developments in West Asia following the signing of an agreement aimed at ending the US-Iran conflict.

Jaishankar said he thanked Al-Thani for ensuring the safety and well-being of the Indian community in Qatar. In a post on X, he said, "Reviewed various facets of our bilateral cooperation especially energy, trade, investments, connectivity, security and people to people ties. Explored new opportunities for deepening our Strategic Partnership."

Al-Thani also holds the foreign affairs portfolio in Qatar. Jaishankar discussed with him assessments of the West Asia conflict and its impact.

During the visit, Jaishankar will meet his counterparts and top leaders of the four Gulf countries to deepen bilateral ties and exchange views on regional developments and issues of mutual interest. Qatar and Oman, along with Pakistan, have emerged as mediators in bringing about the Iran ceasefire after weeks of rising tensions. The indirect talks between the US and Iran in Doha are set to continue after the week-long funeral rites of Iran's slain supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which began on Friday.

After the four-nation Gulf visit, Jaishankar will travel to New York on July 13 to launch India's official campaign for the UN Security Council tenure for 2028-29. He will then attend the third India-EU Trade and Technology Council meeting in Brussels on July 14 and 15 and interact with EU and Belgian counterparts. Overall, the visit to the Gulf is focused on strengthening India's ties with the region while also reviewing the evolving situation in West Asia.
