US President Donald Trump has said he would respect the results of next week's midterm elections, but qualified his assurance by saying it would depend on whether the polls were conducted honestly.

"I will respect the results of the midterm election if they're honest elections," Trump said on Tuesday (October 27) before boarding Air Force One for a campaign trip to Texas.

The US President has stepped up campaigning in traditionally Republican states ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, as Republicans face concerns about their prospects in several races across the country.

Republican strategists told Reuters they were worried about contests ranging from Alaska to South Carolina, partly due to voter dissatisfaction over the impact of Trump's tariffs and the war with Iran on inflation.

The midterm elections will determine control of both chambers of Congress, with all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 Senate seats up for election.

Opinion polls suggest Democrats could regain control of the House, while the Senate also remains a potential battleground.

Republicans currently control Congress, giving Trump greater scope to advance his legislative agenda since returning to the White House following the 2024 presidential election.

A shift in congressional control to the Democrats could constrain Trump's legislative priorities and pave the way for congressional investigations into his administration.
