Typhoon Kalmaegi has claimed at least 66 lives and left 26 people missing in the central Philippines, with many casualties resulting from widespread flooding that stranded residents on rooftops and swept away numerous vehicles in a province still recovering from a deadly earthquake, news agency AP reported.
Kalmaegi moved away from western Palawan province into the South China Sea by Wednesday before noon, bringing sustained winds of up to 130 kph (81 mph) and gusts reaching 180 kph (112 mph), forecasters reported.
