Geography and Administrative Profile
Chelakkara covers a mix of agrarian hinterlands and semi-urban areas within Thrissur district. It includes Chelakkara, Desamangalam, Kondazhy, Mullurkara, Panjal, Pazhayannur, Thiruvilwamala, Vallatholenagar and Varavoor Panchayats in Thalappilly Taluk. Geographically, the region is in central Kerala, and local agriculture and irrigation are influenced by the Bharathapuzha river system.
Voter Participation and the Electorate
Chelakkara had about 198392 voters in the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election. Voter turnout in the constituency has typically been high. The turnout for the 2024 by-election was approximately 74.5% participation.
Representation and Political History
Over the years, Chelakkara has seen substantial political change. In the past, the Indian National Congress held sway in the seat, winning several terms between 1967 and 1991. However, starting in the mid-1990s, the CPI(M) became the primary political force. In 2011 and 2016, U. R. Pradeep (CPI(M)) from LDF has won the seat. In 2021 again K. Radhakrishnan (CPI(M)) from LDF won the seat.
In the 2024 (By-election), U. R. Pradeep (CPI(M)), LDF was again elected. All recent MLAs have been linked with the LDF, reflecting the constituency’s steady support for left-oriented leadership throughout successive electoral cycles.
Results of the 2021 Kerala Assembly Election
K. Radhakrishnan (CPI(M), LDF) won with 83,415 votes or around 54.41% of all valid votes. 44,015 votes were cast for C. C. Sreekumar (INC, UDF) whereas Shajumon Vattekkad (BJP, NDA) received 24045 votes. K. Radhakrishnan won the seat with a margin of nearly 39,400 votes, maintaining the strength of the LDF in the area.
2024 By-Election Outcome
In November 2024, a by-election was conducted in Chelakkara following K. Radhakrishnan’s election to the Lok Sabha, which vacated the assembly seat. The by-election confirmed the continued dominance of the LDF. With 64,827 votes, U. R. Pradeep (CPI(M), LDF) prevailed and with 52,626 votes, Ramya Haridas of the Indian National Congress (UDF) came in second. K. Balakrishnan (BJP, NDA) secured 33,609 votes. Even though the UDF and NDA put on competitive performances, Pradeep's victory margin of more than 12,000 votes gave the LDF a new mandate.
Socioeconomic Features
The local economy of Chelakkara is based mostly on agriculture. Large swaths of land are dedicated to paddy cultivation, coconut farming, and vegetables, which support both subsistence and market activity. A large portion of the farming community is made up of small and marginal farmers, and local economic concerns are still influenced by access to irrigation and market connections. Small towns and markets encourage commerce and service-related jobs, and remittances from families whose members work abroad or in other Indian states boost household incomes.
