Geographic and Administrative Structure
Dharmadam is situated along the Malabar Coast of Kerala and includes the Panchayats of Anjarakandy, Chembilode, Kadambur, Muzhappilangad, and Peralasseri in Kannur Taluk and Dharmadam, Pinarayi, and Vengad in Thalaseery Taluk. Socially, Dharmadam is made up of rural agrarian populations, professionals, service sector workers, small company owners, and coastal fishing communities. Dharmadam has been a prominent Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] stronghold since its founding in 2008, with party candidates consistently winning elections there.
Voter Participation and Electoral Demographics
Dharmadam had 193,486 registered voters for the 2021 Assembly election, including 89,772 men, 103,712 women, and 2 voters of a third gender, according to the Election Commission's official statistical report. The constituency's significant participation in democratic processes is demonstrated by the approximately 84% voter turnout in the 2021 election. These participation rates align with Kerala's reputation for high voter turnout and knowledgeable voting practices.
Highlights of Previous Elections
K. K. Narayanan (CPI(M)) served as the constituency's representative in 2011. In 2016 and 2021, Pinarayi Vijayan (CPI(M)) defeated Mambaram Divakaran (INC) and C Raghunathan, respectively, representing the constituency and went on to become Kerala's chief minister.
Results of the 2021 Kerala Assembly Election
Pinarayi Vijayan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) won the 2021 Kerala Assembly election in Dharmadam with 95,522 votes, or roughly 59.61% of the total votes cast, according to the Election Commission's official statistical report. C. K. Padmanabhan of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received 14,623 votes (9.13%), while C. Raghunathan of the Indian National Congress (INC) came in second with 45,399 votes (28.33%). The SDPI's Basheer Kannadiparamba received 2,280 votes (1.43%), with NOTA and independent candidates sharing the remaining votes.
With a commanding 50,123 votes, or around 31.16% of all valid votes cast, Pinarayi Vijayan won the election, demonstrating the overwhelming support for the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Dharmadam. This triumph strengthened his position as Kerala's current chief minister.
Acknowledgement in Social Development
As part of the state's larger commitment to inclusive development, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan highlighted the historic accomplishment of Dharmadam being proclaimed the first legislative constituency in Kerala to be free of extreme poverty in 2025. The efficacy of social programs put in place at the local level and focused efforts to reduce poverty are reflected in this acknowledgement.
