BRICS Summit 2026 Highlights: PM Modi meets Pezeshkian, says India, Iran should pursue win-win strategy

China and India are arranging a bilateral meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong said the meeting would mark the third consecutive year the two leaders have met, following their meetings in Kazan and Tianjin.

Feihong said China will work with India to implement the strategic guidance of the two leaders, manage bilateral ties from a long-term perspective, strengthen communication and cooperation, and properly handle differences. He said China and India should remain good neighbours and partners that help each other succeed.

Traffic movement will be regulated across several key roads in the national capital on September 12 due to the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit, with restrictions and diversions in place from 9:30 am to 9:30 pm, according to the Delhi Police.

The traffic advisory map identifies controlled roads, prohibited areas, alternative routes and diversion points across central Delhi and adjoining areas.

Traffic restrictions will particularly affect roads around the Bharat Mandapam/Pragati Maidan area, with regulated movement extending to several important corridors connecting the central Delhi Zone with north, south, east and west Delhi.

Key corridors marked on the advisory include Ring Road, Mathura Road, Bhairon Marg, Tilak Marg, the India Gate/C-Hexagon area, Sardar Patel Marg, Patel Road, NH-48 and Parade Road, besides several roads in the Lutyens' Delhi area.

The Delhi Police advised commuters to plan journeys, use the Metro whenever possible, follow designated diversion routes and comply with traffic personnel's directions to avoid inconvenience.

Emergency and essential-service vehicles will receive priority passage.

The advisory map marks alternative routes in blue, controlled roads in orange, prohibited areas in purple and diversion points with red stars, indicating the stretches where commuters may face restrictions or diversions during the summit.

India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12-13.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will meet religious leaders, clerics and intellectuals.

After meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, PM Modi advocated for long-term friendship between Tehran and New Delhi.

In a post on X, PM Modi wrote, "From Bishkek to Delhi, the productive discussions continue. Happy to have met Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of Iran. This visit is more special because it is his first visit to India. We talked about the India-Iran friendship. We believe that we should move forward with a long-term and win-win strategy. The prevailing situation in the region was also discussed. India remains steadfast in its commitment to the pursuit of enduring peace."

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday proposed a new investment platform under the New Development Bank (NDB) to finance projects across BRICS in areas including trade, infrastructure, logistics and technology.

Putin said the initiative could help deepen economic cooperation among BRICS members as the grouping expands its trade and investment ties.

He stressed that BRICS economic cooperation was “not against anyone”, but was instead aimed at advancing the national interests of its member countries.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Friday called for greater use of national currencies in trade among BRICS countries, pitching the move as a way to strengthen economic cooperation within the grouping.

Pezeshkian also highlighted Iran’s strategic geography, energy resources and transport infrastructure, saying they could help position the country as a key link in expanding economic and trade connectivity among BRICS members.
