CM Lalduhoma becomes ZPM chief as Mizoram's ruling party revamps leadership
Mizoram Chief MiniLalduhoma was appointed ZPM president as the ruling party named new office-bearers for 2026-28. The move follows health-linked vacancies and a rule change allowing him to hold the party post while serving as chief minister.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma was appointed president of the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) on Monday as the party announced its new office-bearers for the 2026-28 term. He will replace incumbent Lalliansawta, who has been inactive for some time due to health issues.
The appointments were announced at a function at the party office, where ZPM Val Upa Council (VUC) secretary Thangchungnunga formally introduced the new leadership.
The VUC, the party's highest decision-making body, was tasked with appointing new leaders after some of the incumbent office-bearers could not remain active because of health concerns.
Former state Assembly Speaker and current State Planning Board vice-chairman Dr Kenneth Chawngliana was appointed senior vice-president. Hrangturzo MLA and the chief minister's political adviser Lalmuanpuia Punte was named vice-president, while Lunglei West constituency MLA T. Lalhlimpuia was appointed treasurer.
The party also cut short the tenure of the present office-bearers, which had been scheduled to end next year. In April, incumbent senior vice-president W Chhuanawma had sought leave from his party post, citing persistent health concerns.
Recently, a meeting of the ZPM executive committee approved a proposal allowing the chief minister to simultaneously hold an elected office-bearer post in the party.
The meeting amended Clause 1 of Article 21 of the party constitution, which had earlier barred ministers from holding elected office-bearer positions in the organisation.
With the amendment, Lalduhoma can now hold an elected post in the party while continuing as head of the government. The relaxation does not apply to other ministers, who will continue to be barred from holding elected office-bearer posts under the existing rules.
With Lalduhoma taking over as party president and other key posts being filled, the ZPM has reorganised its leadership for the 2026-28 term after health-related absences among its existing office-bearers.
