Blast near Manipur BJP MLA's house in Imphal; CM Y Khemchand Singh calls it Barbaric
The explosion occurred at around 1.30 am at the rear side of Sapam Ranjan Singh's residence in Konthoujam constituency of Imphal West.
Unidentified men triggered an explosive device at the residential compound of BJP MLA and Manipur government spokesperson Sapam Ranjan Singh in Imphal West district in the early hours of Friday, triggering concern in the area, police said. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, who visited the site, called the attack 'barbaric'.
No injuries were reported, while the blast caused minor damage to the walls of the compound and left a small crater on the ground.
The explosion occurred at around 1.30 am at the rear side of Singh’s residence in Konthoujam constituency.
The MLA said the blast was powerful enough to shake his house. Police were informed soon after and reached the premises to inspect the site and begin an investigation.
"It happened around 1:30 am on August 28, 2026. There was a loud sound, and initially we thought the incident had taken place somewhere very close to my house. We later came to know that the blast had occurred behind my house, within my campus. That is what we came to know about the incident," Sapam Ranjan Singh told the media.
Singh said he had not received any threats before the incident. He had returned to Imphal from outside the state on Thursday and met his workers in the evening.
His return came a day after he travelled to New Delhi, where he held meetings with Central leaders over issues concerning the situation in Manipur.
Condemning the incident, the BJP MLA questioned the motive behind the attack and said such violence should not be directed at anyone.
"Such incidents are highly condemnable, irrespective of who is behind them. It is something no human being should do, and I certainly do not think it is a good thing. I strongly condemn it. Luckily, with God’s grace, no one was hurt. But I believe such incidents should never, ever be repeated," he added.
CHIEF MINISTER TAKES STOCK
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited the MLA’s residence on Friday afternoon and inspected the blast site.
In a social media post, he described the incident as a "senseless and barbaric attack" on a public representative and said those responsible would be brought to justice.
Following the blast, women from Konthoujam held a sit-in protest outside the MLA’s residence, condemning the incident and calling for an end to such acts of violence.
Security agencies are now examining the circumstances surrounding the explosion, including the nature of the explosive used and the circumstances in which it was triggered.
Police are also working to identify those responsible. Further investigation is expected to establish the motive behind the attack and determine whether it was linked to any wider security concerns in the state.
