Face Off: Dr Nishant Anand and Tuhin Sinha debate MLC election outcomes

A debate on India Today's Face Off examines the political outcomes and implications of legislative council elections across four key states. Dr Nishant Anand, National Spokesperson of the Congress, confronts Bharatiya Janata Party National Spokesperson Tuhin Sinha over seat losses in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra. Dr Anand emphasizes that the ruling dispensation lost in prime constituencies including Varanasi, Patna, and Pune, arguing the outcome reflects public dissatisfaction while pressing demands for conducting future elections via paper ballots. In response, Tuhin Sinha defends the Bharatiya Janata Party, pointing out that the party secured 14 out of the 21 seats it contested, including a complete sweep in Karnataka, whilst the Congress drew a blank across all contested seats. Sinha dismisses allegations regarding electronic voting machines as an excuse for repeated electoral failures, maintaining that the Bharatiya Janata Party regularly introspects on narrow margins and localized anti-incumbency across long-held strongholds.

MLC Poll Setback: NDA Sweeps Karnataka 4-0 as Congress Draws Blank Across States

The Congress party faced a major electoral reverse in the Legislative Council elections across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, failing to win a single seat. In Karnataka, the opposition BJP-JD(S) alliance swept all four seats on offer, with the BJP retaining three seats and JD(S) winning the Bengaluru Teachers seat against five-time Congress MLC Puttanna. The elections were conducted using paper ballots rather than Electronic Voting Machines. The NDA targeted the Congress over the outcome, noting that the ruling party failed to secure victory even on ballot papers amid its campaign alleging vote theft. Opposition parties also registered gains in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, while Congress acknowledged the defeat and indicated plans to review results.

Vote counting is underway in Israel's high-stakes general election, pointing to a cliffhanger with no faction securing a 61-seat majority in the 120-member Knesset. Partial tallies show Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's bloc at 54 seats, outperforming prior forecasts though down from earlier tallies. The opposition bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot stands at 47 seats, with Eisenkot pledging to work towards replacing Netanyahu. Arab parties have emerged with a significant 19 seats, placing factions such as Ra'am in a potential kingmaker role amid discussions on outside support. Mobilised IDF reservist David Macklin notes that soldiers' double-envelope ballots are still being counted, which could marginally shift numbers before final official results are certified.
