Congress Slams Election Commission Over Internal Rift Allegations, Alleges Assault on Democracy

A political debate has escalated in Delhi over law and order, police action, and women's safety following recent crime incidents. Concerns were raised regarding multiple cases of assault and violence against women reported across areas including Karol Bagh, Swaroop Nagar, Sadar Bazar, and Kalkaji. Questions were also raised regarding basic safety infrastructure in public spaces, particularly the persistent issue of dark spots and the lack of adequate lighting arrangements in large public parks like Astha Kunj.

Tension and serious safety concerns have gripped students near Lady Shri Ram College for Women in South Delhi following an encounter operation involving a rape accused, identified as Asif, near the campus. According to reports, police detained the suspect after shooting him in the leg when he opened fire. Classes were promptly shifted online as the area remained deserted. Students expressed deep frustration over persistent safety issues around the college back gate and the route toward Moolchand, citing recurring harassment, inadequate police patrolling, and non-functional infrastructure like pink booths. Voicing their distress, students questioned why basic security measures must be demanded through protests rather than provided proactively by authorities. Teachers have also stood in solidarity with the safety concerns raised by the students as plans for a solidarity march were discussed.

A seventeen-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in a Delhi Development Authority managed park in Kalkaji while visiting the location with her friend on her birthday. Three accused individuals, identified as Hemant, Mukesh, and Asif, reportedly cornered the victim after intimidating the duo by posing as police officers. Following the incident, the victim was taken to AIIMS for a medical examination, and police arrested all three accused after registering a first information report. The incident has raised major concerns regarding park maintenance and safety protocols across the 150-acre Astha Kunj Park, where locals pointed out severe security lapses, including lack of CCTV cameras at entry and exit gates and inadequate lighting in dense areas. In response, security has been heightened across the premises with deployment from local police and Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel.

A high-level security meeting was convened by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi alongside the Vice Chairman of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner, and the Delhi Police Commissioner following a shocking rape incident in the national capital. The meeting focuses on administrative and security lapses, particularly after safety concerns arose regarding the lack of CCTV cameras and security personnel at a DDA-managed park in Kalkaji. Over the last 12 days, four severe assault cases have raised major concerns over women's safety and policing in Delhi. In the aftermath, students and teachers of Lady Shri Ram College raised security concerns, leading to the suspension of offline classes, shifting to online mode, and organized protest marches outside the college campus.
