Delhi Building Collapse: Owner Arrested, 5 MCD Officials Suspended, Rescue On

The Delhi High Court has issued notices to the Delhi Government, Delhi University, MCD, and NHRC following a building collapse in Satya Niketan that claimed seven lives. Terming the incident unfortunate and completely avoidable, the court called for audit reports, questioned how authorities monitor apartments rented as paying guest accommodations, and sought details on action against erring officials. The court noted that poor conditions in student accommodations and hostels endanger student safety. Ground reports from the site revealed rampant illegal constructions exceeding height limits, with five to six-storey structures built without solid foundations or pillars. Rescue operations cleared debris with canine squads and NDRF personnel on standby, pulling twelve people from the rubble, including seven declared dead and five survivors undergoing first aid. While some officials have been suspended, the tragedy exposes civic negligence and systemic failure across multiple student housing facilities in the capital.
