IIT Bombay Student Death: Crime Branch Probe, Caste Harassment Allegation & Campus Split

A demolition drive was carried out under heavy police deployment in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh area to facilitate an ongoing road-widening project leading to Max Hospital. Civic authorities deployed bulldozers late at night to demolish parts of Madina Masjid along with several adjoining residential structures identified as encroachments. Civic agencies stated that notices had been issued prior to taking down the structures to clear the road. However, the mosque committee claimed that multiple notices were served in rapid succession without adequate time to respond. AIMIM Delhi State President Shoaib Jamati arrived at the site, terming the overnight demolition unconstitutional and drawing comparisons to a previous incident in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Local residents also expressed dismay over the action taken in the constituency. Demolition operations have currently been halted and bulldozers removed from the location.

A 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped inside a DDA-managed park in Delhi's Kalkaji area by three men who posed as police officers after she visited the nearby temple with a male friend on her birthday. Following the incident, the victim's friend alerted the police via a PCR call, initiating a probe. The Delhi women's commission took suo motu cognisance, seeking an action-taken report from the police. Safety concerns were raised regarding the park's poor lighting and open gates. Subsequently, Lady Shri Ram College suspended offline classes and shifted to online teaching after a police encounter with an accused occurred nearly 50 metres from the college back gate. The bulletin highlighted that four minors were raped across the national capital within a span of 12 days, raising concerns over women's security.

Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) banks in India may remain shut for five consecutive days from September 26 to September 30 due to a three-day nationwide strike called by bank employee unions, combined with the regular weekend closure on fourth Saturday and Sunday. The key demands raised by the bank unions include the implementation of a five-day working week and the complete withdrawal of the Performance-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Customers have been advised to complete essential branch-related work, including cash deposits, cash withdrawals, cheque clearances, and loan processing, before September 25 to avoid disruptions. While physical bank branches will remain closed during the strike period, digital channels such as ATMs, UPI transactions, internet banking, and mobile banking services are expected to remain functional. The government is currently holding discussions with stakeholder associations, urging them to reconsider the proposed strike.

India and Canada are moving towards finalising a landmark bilateral trade deal by December, aiming to achieve a 70 billion dollar push in trade. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Canada around the middle of December, coinciding with the G20 Summit timeline to conclude the negotiations. The proposed agreement marks a reset in bilateral ties, shifting focus towards energy cooperation, defence, talent mobility, and market diversification. The two nations are seeking to move past previous diplomatic friction over the Nijjar issue to build a stronger economic partnership. Discussions highlight Canada's interest in supplying energy resources like oil and uranium to India's expanding market of 1.5 billion people. However, key challenges remain, including internal resource extraction regulations in Canada and bureaucratic hurdles in India. The potential pact follows several major trade agreements signed by India since 2021, presenting a new chapter of economic collaboration between both democracies.
