INDIA Bloc Considers Joint Front, Demands CEC Resignation Over Poll Irregularities

Opposition parties are uniting to seek the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee reaching out to long-time political rival CPI(M) and holding discussions with Rahul Gandhi to convene an all-opposition meeting in Delhi. CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby wrote to INDIA bloc constituents on 23 September, drawing a swift response from Banerjee, whose party MPs are reportedly in touch with left leaders at the Centre. TMC asserts that rivalries must be set aside to save democracy. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party mounted an attack, stating that neither the Trinamool Congress nor the CPI(M) holds significant presence in West Bengal following recent assembly elections. Calling the unity a survival tactic and optics, the BJP stated that the opposition must take their proof to court rather than protesting on the streets. Congress members have staged nationwide street protests, including demonstrations in Kolkata, as opposition parties amplify their agitation against the CEC.

An accused in the attack on Assistant Sub-Inspector Jaswant Singh was shot dead in a police encounter in the Jhandher area of Amritsar. The suspect, identified as Karanvir Singh, had previously slipped away from custody after being arrested. When Amritsar Rural Police intercepted him, he opened fire, prompting retaliatory gunfire that resulted in fatal bullet injuries. Two Punjab Police personnel sustained injuries during the shootout, with one hit in the thigh and another saved by a bulletproof jacket. Police stated that Karanvir fired upon the ASI in Ajnala earlier in the month.

The arrest of eighty-four-year-old industrialist R. Veeramani under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act has triggered a political controversy in Tamil Nadu. Veeramani, founder of GEM Granites, faces allegations of sexually abusing multiple minors over several years at a rented premises. Police have arrested four individuals so far, including his close aides Mahendra Simhan, Shanthi, and Ganeshan. An all-women Special Investigation Team has been formed to probe the case. Investigators are also examining financial transactions involving around seventy crore rupees and a property deal allegedly used to facilitate the crimes and suppress complaints. The case was previously dropped by police citing unclear video evidence from a whistleblower pen drive, before a special court directed a reinvestigation. The development has sparked a sharp political confrontation between the DMK and TVK over allegations of administrative inaction and cover-ups.

The Janata Dal (Secular) has demanded a clarification from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar regarding reported differences among the three Election Commissioners. Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy stated that the real facts surrounding the issues inside the Election Commission must be brought out publicly by its members. Calling the Election Commission of India an autonomous body with significant national responsibilities, he emphasised that the reality should be disclosed to the media and to the country rather than remaining confined to media reports.
