Satya Niketan Collapse: Delhi HC Issues Notice, 7 Dead, Illegal PG Hostels Under Scanner

A five-storey building collapsed in the Satya Niketan area of Delhi, triggering intensive rescue operations by the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Police, firefighters, and specialized K-9 teams. Twelve people were pulled out from the debris, with seven individuals confirmed dead. Rescue personnel and women police units have been deployed continuously on site as operations continue past twenty-four hours. The collapsed structure was situated near several prominent Delhi University colleges, housing students and staff alongside construction workers who were carrying out basement work. Officials note that casualties could have been higher had students not left for the long holiday weekend.

The move comes as belated government action after years of unchecked construction violations across Delhi NCR. Concerns have been raised over whether surveying building heights using measuring rods is the responsibility of elected legislators, arguing instead that enforcement and permit oversight require scientific involvement by civic bodies such as the MCD and police rather than post-tragedy audits by MLAs.
