Tamil Nadu RTI Rollback, Opposition Backlash And TVK U-Turn

A major political confrontation has erupted between the BJP and the opposition over the Chief Election Commissioner and the Special Intensive Revision exercise. Opposition parties, led by the Congress and INDIA bloc constituents, have demanded the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, accusing the authorities of disenfranchising voters, calling the exercise an assault on democracy, and weighing an impeachment motion. The BJP has countered vigorously, with leaders accusing the opposition of attacking constitutional institutions to conceal their electoral failures and misleading the public. While the opposition alleges opacity and claims legal safeguards for election commissioners protect wrongdoing, the ruling party asserts that decisions within the Election Commission were taken unanimously and that allegations against the poll panel remain baseless.

Efforts to unite the opposition gained momentum as political parties coordinated action regarding the demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's removal. Ahead of an opposition meeting scheduled for 30 September at the Constitution Club, CPM General Secretary MA Baby is slated to meet former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Deliberations have brought together political rivals, including the Communist Party of India and the Trinamool Congress, alongside outreach to other parties. The discussions follow reports of internal objections by election commissioners over decisions taken by the Chief Election Commissioner. Opposition members plan to hold coordinated protests against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Election Commission, while also preparing to move an impeachment motion in Parliament.

The Tamil Nadu government faces severe backlash from its allies, the Congress and the CPM, following its decision to exempt law and order matters from the purview of the Right to Information Act by classifying the department as an intelligence and security organisation. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram opposed the move, stating that restricting RTI sets a bad precedent and that the Act should be expanded. Meanwhile, CPM MP Su Venkatesan demanded an immediate rollback, alleging an attempt to turn the state into a police state. Opposition parties, including the AIADMK, have also criticised the government over the timing of the notification.

The remarks underlined that violence, vandalism, and efforts targeting election headquarters undermine democratic conventions, asserting that attempts to cast doubt on electoral systems weaken the integrity of democratic bodies.
