Dr Ashok Seth: 'Our Hearts Are Genetically Weaker Than The West'
Speaking on the podcast 'Doctor Versus Internet' with host Sonal Mehrotra Kapoor, eminent cardiologist Dr Ashok Seth addressed the escalating crisis of cardiovascular disease among Indians. Dr Seth stated that "our hearts are genetically weaker than the West," pointing out that Indians carry genetic predispositions such as elevated visceral fat and higher levels of lipoprotein(a). He cautioned that unaccustomed, severe physical exertion or heavy weightlifting can precipitate acute cardiac events by triggering rupture or clot formation across undetected arterial blockages. Dr Seth highlighted smoking as an exceptionally dangerous factor, observing severe heart attacks and extensive clotting even in young individuals with otherwise normal blood vessels. Emphasising early detection and lifestyle management, he recommended baseline lipid profiling starting at age ten for individuals with strong family histories, alongside periodic blood sugar and blood pressure checks. Dr Seth also demonstrated the protocol for measuring blood pressure accurately at home using automated monitors.
