Farooq Meets Rebel NC MLAs, Omar Stays Firm, Aga Ruhullah Resigns
Jammu and Kashmir's ruling National Conference faces serious internal dissent following an October cabinet expansion by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Around fifteen dissident MLAs and one independent legislator held discussions regarding their grievances over cabinet appointments and the functioning of the administration. While Chief Minister Omar Abdullah maintained that he would engage only with National Conference legislators and not the independent MLAs, party president Farooq Abdullah stepped in to meet the rebel leaders in an effort to maintain party cohesion. The discontent within the party camp was further intensified by the exit of Srinagar Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, who resigned citing ideological differences and unkept promises regarding constitutional rights and Article 370. Meanwhile, dissident lawmakers have sought a cabinet review and greater democratic engagement in policy matters, while party leadership maintains that the government remains stable and internal issues will be handled through mutual consultation.
