Oracle layoffs reach India: Product engineering teams feared to face biggest impact

Oracle’s latest round of job cuts has reached India, with product engineering teams feared to be among those most affected, according to a Moneycontrol report. The report said layoffs have begun within Oracle India, with employees in product engineering bearing the brunt of the cuts.

Oracle has not formally confirmed the number of employees affected or the extent of the layoffs in India.

The layoffs started in the US on September 14 and have since extended to India. Product engineering has seen a larger share of the cuts, while support and consulting functions have been relatively less affected. Some senior employees at Oracle Financial Services Software (OFSS) have also reportedly been impacted as part of the wider global restructuring.

The number of employees affected in India remains unclear. Earlier estimates suggested that around 3,000 employees in the country could be impacted, while internal estimates put the global job cuts at between 7,000 and 10,000. These numbers have not been confirmed by Oracle.

By September 15, Oracle’s global workforce was estimated to have declined by around 5,000 to 6,000 employees over the weekend. Discussions among employees in India suggest that the final number could change further as the restructuring progresses and additional termination notices are issued.

The sudden cuts have caught employees in at least one unit off guard, particularly as senior management had not indicated that their teams would be included in the exercise.

ORACLE EMPLOYEES SHARE THEIR LAYOFF EXPERIENCES

As Oracle’s latest round of layoffs continues, employees affected by the cuts are sharing how they found out they had lost their jobs, with some saying they received little or no warning. It remains unclear whether the employees sharing these experiences are based in India or are Indian employees working in the US.

One Oracle employee reported on Reddit that their system access was blocked when they woke up, with a separation email arriving about an hour later. “All access got locked, then an hour later, the separation email came. Everyone knew layoffs were coming, but I was completely shocked I was affected,” the employee wrote.

The developer, who had around two years of experience, said they were still in a junior role, had not received a promotion since joining as a fresher, and had never received a poor performance rating.

Another account came from the wife of an Oracle employee who worked as a Senior Principal Software Developer and had been with the company for 12 years. In a LinkedIn post, she said he realised he had been laid off after finding that he could no longer access his work system. “After working for Oracle for 12 years, all he got was being unable to log in to his system to get the news,” she wrote.

The accounts offer a glimpse into how abruptly some employees experienced the latest round of job cuts, adding a human dimension to Oracle’s broader restructuring and workforce reduction.

ORACLE CUTS JOBS WHILE RAMPING UP AI SPENDING

Oracle’s workforce reductions come as the company continues to increase its investments in artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure and data-centre capacity. At the same time, it is reshaping its workforce and reducing costs in areas where business priorities are changing.

The company has also been stepping up hiring in areas including AI/ML, data-centre operations, network reliability and infrastructure-related roles, pointing to a shift in the skills Oracle is prioritising.

The latest restructuring follows a significant reduction in Oracle’s workforce. The company had about 162,000 employees a year earlier. By May 31, 2026, its headcount had fallen to roughly 141,000 after around 21,000 jobs were eliminated during the fiscal year.

The latest round reflects Oracle’s broader effort to control costs while directing more resources towards AI and cloud infrastructure.
