For generations of aspiring doctors, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi has stood at the pinnacle of medical education in India. Ask almost any AIIMS graduate what sets the institution apart, and the answer is often the same: the patients. The best doctors will be those who know how to use AI intelligently without becoming dependent on it.”

Research remains another defining pillar of the AIIMS experience. Earlier this year, it climbed in the QS Global Rankings, a reflection not only of its clinical excellence but also of the growing international recognition of its scientific output and research impact. Students are encouraged to participate in research from an early stage, across areas ranging from clinical studies and translational medicine to public health and biomedical innovation, helping bridge the gap between scientific discovery and patient care. Equally important is the institute’s focus on community medicine. Students are exposed not only to the realities of tertiary healthcare but also to the social, economic and environmental factors that shape health outcomes. “India’s healthcare challenges cannot be understood only from within hospital walls,” says Dr Tandon. “Community medicine teaches future doctors to understand the realities in which patients live.”

For prospective students, Dr Tandon has an important message. “Medicine should never be chosen simply because it is prestigious or secure,” he says. “It is a demanding profession that requires commitment, resilience and genuine interest. If the passion is absent, the pressures can become overwhelming. But for those who truly want to serve, there are very few careers that offer greater meaning.” It is a philosophy that continues to draw some of the brightest young minds in the country to AIIMS.
