Every home has a story hidden inside it. Somebody built it years ago, made a hundred quiet decisions about it and then moved on. The people living in it now inherited all of those decisions without ever getting a say in them. That is worth thinking about, because almost everything written about eco-conscious homes is written for people building from scratch. Most of us are living inside somebody else’s choices and paying for them every month in bills we never question. You cannot undo those choices. But you can chip away at them, starting with something that takes two minutes.
