K Bhagyaraj death: Tamil Nadu announces state honours for legendary filmmaker

The Tamil Nadu government, under Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, announced state honours for veteran filmmaker K Bhagyaraj following his death at 73. Tributes poured in from across the film fraternity, with Venkatesh Daggubati, Kamal Haasan, MK Stalin, Raghava Lawrence, Selvaraghavan and Simran remembering his lasting legacy.

Veteran filmmaker K Bhagyaraj died at the age of 73.

Veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor and screenwriter K Bhagyaraj died in Chennai on Saturday after suffering a heart attack. He was 73. Following his death, the Tamil Nadu government announced state honours for his final journey, while the film fraternity mourned the loss of one of Tamil cinema’s most celebrated creative voices known for his exceptional storytelling, screenplay writing and middle-class family dramas.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) Tamil Nadu, under Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, paid tribute to Bhagyaraj and announced that state honours will be accorded during his final journey.

The CMO wrote on X, "Upon learning of the passing of Thiru. K. Bhagyaraj, the preeminent director, actor, screenwriter, dialogue writer, and music composer of Tamil cinema, who left an indelible mark through his multifaceted talents, I am filled with profound shock and deep sorrow. In tribute to Thiru. K. Bhagyaraj's contributions to the film industry and as a mark of respect, state honors will be accorded to his final journey (sic)."

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also remembered the veteran filmmaker and wrote on X, "Within just a few weeks of the teacher's passing, the Tamil film world has now lost his student as well! In Indian cinema, as the emperor of unfinished screenplays, as the realistic hero who captivated everyone, as a writer endowed with the ability to navigate complex situations with brief dialogues, and as an extraordinary director who triumphed in every aspect, Mr. BhagyaRaj made his mark. My deepest condolences to Mrs. Poornima BhagyaRaj, Shanthanu, Saranya, and the entire family grieving his loss, as well as his friends in the film fraternity (sic)."

Actor Kamal Haasan paid tribute to the filmmaker and wrote, "K. Bhagyaraj's Rajan (whom I was introduced to 50 years ago) is no more today. Tamil-speaking our cinema has lost two Rajas within the same month (sic)."

Actor Mammootty also paid tribute to the veteran filmmaker. He wrote on X, "RIP Bhagyaraj. Heartfelt condolences (sic)."

Rajinikanth paid tribute to Bhagyaraj and wrote on X, "For fifty years, in the Tamil film world, through his extraordinary talent and creativity, he has given many successful films and earned an indelible place in the hearts of Tamil people - our friend Mr. Bhagyaraj. His sudden passing causes me immense sorrow and shock. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul find peace. (sic)."

Actor R Madhavan remembered Bhagyaraj as a gifted screenwriter and a kind-hearted person. Sharing a tribute on his Instagram Story, he wrote, "One of the finest screenplay writers and a wonderful Human being full of kindness. He will be so missed by all. Rest in peace, sir (sic)."

Actor Venkatesh Daggubati also expressed his grief over Bhagyaraj’s demise. He wrote on X, "Deeply saddened by the passing of Bhagyaraj Sir. His work transcended languages and touched the hearts of millions. I feel fortunate to have been a part of films like Sundarakanda and Abbaigaru, which were born from his remarkable storytelling. Indian cinema has lost one of its finest filmmakers. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and countless admirers (sic)."

Several other celebrities, including Raghava Lawrence, Selvaraghavan and Simran, also mourned the filmmaker’s death. Raghava Lawrence wrote, "Deeply saddened by the demise of Director Bakyaraj Sir. His contribution to cinema is unforgettable, and his work has inspired generations. This is a great loss to the film industry. Heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace (sic)."

Selvaraghavan shared a brief tribute, writing, "AN ERA ENDS. RIP sir (sic)."

Simran wrote, "The news of K Bhagyaraj sir's passing is truly heartbreaking A visionary filmmaker, brilliant storyteller, and exceptional actor. He brought laughter, warmth, and meaningful social messages through his work. Tamil cinema has lost one of its finest creative minds. My thoughts and prayers are with his family & loved ones during this difficult time. Om Shanti (sic)."

Bhagyaraj is survived by his wife, former actor Poornima Bhagyaraj, and their children, actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj and daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj.

Born as Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district, he began his career as an assistant to legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja before emerging as a successful director. Over the course of his illustrious career, Bhagyaraj directed more than 25 films and acted in over 75 movies. He was widely regarded as one of Tamil cinema’s finest screenwriters, known for his sharp dialogues, relatable characters and socially rooted storytelling.

His celebrated works include Mundhanai Mudichu, Andha 7 Naatkal and Darling, Darling, Darling, which continue to remain classics.
