Video: Director Adoor Gopalakrishnan says cinema must challenge audiences

Veteran filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan believes cinema should do more than simply give audiences an escape. Speaking at the India Today South Conclave 2026 in Kochi, Adoor criticised commercial filmmaking for often underestimating viewers and assuming they don't want to think.

“In commercial cinema, they believe the audience is stupid and that the audience has no power to think,” he said, adding that filmmakers often play it safe because audiences are generally expected to seek entertainment.

Adoor argued that cinema has evolved from being seen merely as a way to pass time and has become a powerful artistic medium. He also stressed that filmmakers have a responsibility to offer audiences something meaningful rather than simply making films that are easy to consume.

The filmmaker is now preparing to reunite with Mammootty after 32 years for Padayaatra, their fourth collaboration. The film follows Mammootty as a doctor whose life changes after a suspected Maoist attack brings him under police scrutiny.
