In Delhi's Satya Niketan, students residing in paying guest accommodations face severe civic and infrastructural challenges, including high rents, dilapidated buildings, overflowing sewage, single exits, and safety violations. Following the collapse of a five-decade-old building operating as the Hostel Days PG, students from Delhi University South Campus highlighted issues of poor quality food, contaminated drinking water causing illnesses like typhoid and jaundice, and unaddressed maintenance complaints. Students reported paying rents ranging from fifteen thousand to thirty thousand rupees, alongside mandatory security deposits that PG operators frequently refuse to return upon departure. Across localities like Satya Niketan and Anand Niketan, students from states including Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh endure unregulated housing conditions due to a lack of affordable alternatives. The incident underlines widespread concerns regarding safety compliance and basic living facilities across student housing hubs in the university area.

A building collapse in south Delhi's student hub Satya Niketan has resulted in the loss of seven lives, prompting widespread concern over hostel safety and civic accountability. Students studying at Delhi University colleges, who come from various parts of the country, are vacating their paying guest accommodations and returning home or moving to relatives' residences due to safety worries. The incident has raised questions regarding building bylaw violations, structural audits, and administrative inspections in congested student localities. Although the Delhi Chief Minister stated that action has been initiated, questions persist regarding delayed enforcement and whether the tragedy could have been prevented. Outstation students residing in multi-storey accommodation units with several rooms per floor describe an atmosphere of concern following the incident. While many students are temporarily leaving the area to escape unsafe conditions, concerns remain about the recurring issues of substandard living conditions, lack of regulatory oversight, and missing accountability when they return to continue their academic education.

Rescue operations have ended at the site of the five-storey PG building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, with the toll rising to seven. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered administrative action, following which five MCD officials, including a deputy commissioner, were suspended. Police also arrested the building’s owner, Hariram Gupta, his wife Urmila and their son Mahesh. The Delhi High Court, meanwhile, sought a high-level investigation into possible lapses by civic authorities and the university. Student representatives from the ABVP and NSUI flagged poor infrastructure, fire-safety violations, illegal alterations and steep rents at private accommodations. They said Delhi University has only around 7,000 hostel seats for nearly seven lakh students. Separately, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told a defence conclave that the armed forces would deliver a decisive response to cross-border terrorism.
