Proxy wars, sanctions and nuke tensions: 7 decades of tumultuous US-Iran relations

The ongoing US-Iran war has claimed over 1,000 lives in its first week, with no signs of de-escalation. The conflict marks the explosive culmination of decades of mistrust between two nations that were once close allies in the 1950s. Their partnership was shattered by the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which transformed Iran from a pro-Western ally under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi into an ideological adversary under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The report traces key flashpoints including the 1979 hostage crisis, the Iran-Contra scandal, nuclear programme disputes, and the 2015 nuclear deal that Donald Trump withdrew from in 2018. Recent escalations included Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in June 2025 and US B-2 bomber attacks on Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan facilities. A February 2026 strike reportedly killed Iran's Supreme Leader, prompting Iranian retaliation with missiles targeting Israel and Gulf allies, whilst closing the Strait of Hormuz and spiking global oil prices.
