Onto Manchester - A Sri Lankan win would have thrown Group B wide open, but it was not to be. Their hopes of reaching the semi-finals are still alive, with games against Scotland and Ireland to come, and those are matches they will back themselves to win. However, their poor net run rate does little to help their cause, should it come down to that. That is all from Bristol. The skipper of West Indies Women - Hayley Matthews says winning the toss was crucial, with the pitch offering a bit of tennis-ball bounce early on, and she was pleased that her side was able to take advantage of those conditions. Adds that there was also a degree of tactical awareness involved, having played Sri Lanka earlier in the year. Matthews feels the decision to play an extra spinner made a significant difference on the day. Reflecting on the chase, she says there were never any real nerves in the dressing room because they bat deep. However, she admits the side would have liked to chase the target a little more convincingly. Hayley says this puts them in a really good position heading into their clash against England. She adds that confidence within the group is high after three wins on the trot, but stresses that the team remains focused on taking it one game at a time.

The captain of Sri Lanka Women - Chamari Athapaththu says that the wicket was a bit sticky today, and West Indies bowled according to the conditions. She adds that they needed 140 on this wicket, but they fell short. She reckons that their bowlers did a good job, but they gave away extras. She further says that 98 was never going to be enough against this West Indies side. She ends by saying that their bowlers did well, but they need to improve on their batting.

Damage done up front - With this being the first game of the tournament in Bristol, there was a degree of uncertainty around how the surface would play. However, the West Indies read the conditions superbly and made the most of them after opting to bowl first. It all started with Hayley Matthews, who ripped through the top order to reduce Sri Lanka to 9/3. There was a semblance of a recovery through Kavisha Dilhari and Nilakshika Silva, but neither batter was able to bat deep enough to engineer a meaningful fightback. West Indies chipped away at the wickets to roll the Lankans over for 98.

Taylor kept her cool - It was a laboured start to the chase, as the Windies' batters tussled with a surface that held up at times. Sri Lanka blew hot and cold with the ball but managed to pick up wickets along the way. With only 99 to chase, it was more a case of keeping calm heads in the middle than anything else. West Indies eventually found that composure through Stafanie Taylor, whose experience came to the fore as she steered her side home.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Hayley Matthews has been given the award for her figures of 3/15 in 4 overs. With the bat, she scored a run-a-ball 17. Hayley says that she had the opportunity to start things off with the ball, and that went well, and she got some early wickets. Mentions that they were in a comfortable position at the end of the first innings and ends by saying that she is really happy with how they performed.

West Indies get over the line - They made this chase of 99 look more difficult than it should have been, but all that matters is that they have the two points in the bag. It is a third consecutive win for West Indies, who remain unbeaten alongside England in Group B. Sri Lanka made West Indies work for it, but their batting unit ultimately let them down earlier in the day. While they put up a fight with the ball, conceding 23 extras and not being tidy enough in the field only made the task harder for the Asian side.

99 should not be difficult - It was a thoroughly clinical bowling performance from the Caribbean side. Skipper Matthews led the charts with her stellar three-wicket haul. Every other West Indies bowler got in on the action, walking away with a wicket apiece. A quick word - Ashmini Munisar has caught up with Laura McGoldrick. Asked about her first World Cup wicket, Munisar says it felt really good. She reveals that Hayley Matthews reminded her about the achievement afterwards, following which the entire team gathered around her in celebration. Munisar says her approach is always to look for wickets and attack the stumps. She adds that the team's focus throughout the innings was to maintain high energy levels, and the excellent start with the ball helped that momentum carry through the rest of the innings.

Dominance with the ball - There was a brief glimmer of hope as Kavisha Dilhari and Nilakshi Silva dug deep to stabilise the innings. Just as they were starting to look comfortable, Aaliyah Alleyne struck a crucial blow, dismissing Dilhari to leave Sri Lanka at 57/5 at the halfway mark. Nilakshika Silva continued to fight a lone battle, top-scoring with a gritty 30 before falling in the 16th over. A late 17-run cameo from Kawya Kavindi provided some tail-end resistance, but the Sri Lankan lineup was ultimately bundled out for just 98 runs.

Sri Lanka Women have been bowled out for 98! It was an absolute dream start for the West Indies Women, led by none other than their captain, Hayley Matthews. She set the tone immediately, tearing through the Sri Lankan top order with three massive wickets in her first two overs. Sri Lanka found themselves in a mountain of trouble at a dismal 9/3 after just three overs. Chinelle Henry then joined the party in the sixth over, chipping in with another wicket to leave the batting side completely reeling at 23/4 at the end of Powerplay.

A quick word - Sri Lankan opener, Vishmi Gunarathne, has caught up with Carlos Brathwaite. Gunarathne says that their batters did well in their last game against New Zealand. Adds that they had good practice sessions, and they have their plans ready. Vishmi shares that she admires Virat Kohli. She ends by saying that their head coach keeps on motivating them every time they play.

PITCH REPORT - Julia Price informs that the centre wicket is in use for this contest, with temperatures hovering around 28 degrees Celsius. The straight boundary measures 70 metres, while the square boundaries are 60 metres on either side. Isobel Joyce joins her and notes that there is about 11 millimetres of grass left on the surface. Isobel gets down to inspect the pitch closely and observes a bit of moisture underneath, which she believes is one of the reasons Hayley Matthews opted to bowl first. She further says that spinners have traditionally enjoyed more success at this venue and feels that has as much to do with the ground dimensions as the surface itself.

The skipper of Sri Lanka Women - Chamari Athapaththu says that they were anyway looking to bat first, and she expresses confidence in the batting unit. Athapaththu feels the conditions are good for batting and believes the side is adapting well despite a hectic travel schedule. Chamari says they take confidence from their T20I series win in the Caribbean earlier in the year, but stresses that this is a different match altogether. Informs that there is one change with Imesha Dulani coming into the side.

The captain of West Indies Women - Hayley Matthews says that there is some grass on the wicket, so they want to see what it is doing. She reckons that the partnerships in the series against Sri Lanka were important and they have taken learnings from it. She mentions the one change in their side with Ashmini Munisar coming in for Qiana Joseph.
