The Mixed Team event gold medallist shuttlers Saina, Sindhu, Ashwini Ponnappa, N Sikki Reddy, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, Kidambi Srikanth, Pranaav Jerry Chopra, HS Prannoy and Ruthvika Gadde landed on the Hyderabad airport last night and people welcomed them with bouquets and garlands.
Saina also won Gold in the women's singles while Srikanth and Sindhu claimed Silver in the men's and women's singles respectively. Satwik and Chirag returned with a silver medal in men's doubles while Ashwini and Sikki won a Bronze in the women's doubles.
The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption has initiated searches at properties linked to a former Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam minister in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. Four DVAC units reached the residence, where cadre also gathered outside following the action. Officials stated that further details will be shared once the search operations conclude.
Sri Lankan opposition leader Namal Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has been arrested following questioning by the Anti-Corruption Commission in connection with an alleged corruption case linked to a SriLankan Airlines Airbus purchase. A magistrate ordered his judicial remand until September 18. Investigators allege that Namal Rajapaksa benefited by $800,000 in the Airbus transaction. Eight people, suspected to be students from Tamil Nadu, were killed after their car collided with a parked stationary lorry in Kerala's Thrissur. All eight occupants inside the vehicle died on the spot. The car, bearing a Tamil Nadu registration number, was travelling from Guruvayur towards Kodungallur when the accident occurred. Local residents launched the initial rescue operations, after which police and fire personnel arrived at the scene. The bodies of the victims were shifted to the Thrissur Medical College mortuary.
A flood alert remains in force across North India following relentless rainfall that has caused rivers and reservoirs to swell. In Uttar Pradesh, nearly 3.5 lakh people across 26 districts have been affected, with twelve dams in Lalitpur opening gates to discharge excess water. Swelling waters of the Ganga and Yamuna have inundated colonies in Prayagraj and brought levels close to danger marks in Varanasi, while Kanpur closed a bridge over the Pandav River. In Bihar, eight districts are on alert as the Ganga submerged large areas of Danapur Diara in Patna, Begusarai, and parts of Kosi where hundreds of families remain cut off, prompting rescue operations by the State Disaster Response Force.
