Arvind Kejriwal

Born on August 16, 1968, Arvind Kejriwal is an Indian politician, a former bureaucrat and the 7th Chief Minister of Delhi. An IIT Kharagpur Alumnus, Kejriwal is the founder and convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and gained public attention when he won the Raman Magsaysay Award for his role as a Right to Information (RTI) activist in 2006.

Kejriwal was born in Haryana's Bhiwani district and completed his schooling from Hisar. A student of mechanical engineering, Kejriwal left his job at Tata Steels, cleared his civil service examinations and joined the Indian Revenue Services in 1993. He married his batchmate Sunita Kejriwal in 1995.

A few years later, he shifted his focus to social issues and started a movement called 'Parivartan' with Manish Sisodia and others to address the grievances of the citizens of Delhi. He joined Anna Hazare to lead an anti-corruption dharna seeking enactment of a Jan Lokpal Bill in 2011. Following his differences with Hazare, he laid the foundation of AAP and contested the 2013 Delhi Assembly Elections.

In 2013, Kejriwal defeated three-time Chief Minister Sheila Dixit in New Delhi constituency and went to become the second-youngest CM of the national capital. But he resigned in less than 50 days. He unsuccessfully contested against the BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi from Varanasi in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

However, in 2015, Kejriwal returned to power after his party saw a landslide win and bagged 67 out of 70 seats. He was sworn in as the Chief Minister for the second time on February 14, 2015. He became the Chief Minister of Delhi for the third time in 2020 and is considered one of the most prominent politicians of India.

Video: BJP's Parvesh Verma accuses Kejriwal of abandoning party principles over lavish lifestyle

The Bharatiya Janata Party has launched an attack on the Aam Aadmi Party leadership over allegations of constructing a new lavish bungalow on Lodhi Road in Delhi. During a press conference, the Delhi Deputy Chief Minister accused the AAP Chief of abandoning the party's foundational principles of simplicity in favour of an extravagant lifestyle. The BJP leader presented the alleged layout of the new residence, which reportedly includes five bedrooms and four drawing rooms, questioning the source of the funds used for its construction.

Raghav Chadha removed as Aam Aadmi Party's Rajya Sabha deputy leader

The Aam Aadmi Party has removed Raghav Chadha from the post of deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, replacing him with AAP MP Ashok Mittal. The decision follows Chadha's continued silence on crucial party matters, particularly his absence of response after top AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, were discharged by a lower court in the excise policy CBI case. Notably, Chadha did not meet Kejriwal following the discharge and did not post any message on social media in support of the party leaders. While Chadha had initially defended AAP leaders during the excise policy case investigation, his eventual silence raised questions within the party. AAP sources maintain the move is a leadership change ahead of Punjab assembly elections in 2027, though party insiders suggest this was anticipated given the deteriorating relationship. The removal marks a significant setback for Chadha, who had built a reputation in the Rajya Sabha raising issues concerning the middle class, including gig workers' rights, telecom matters, and airport food costs.

Unpolitics: Gujarat UCC pushes gender justice, says Deputy CM Harsh Sanghvi

In an interview, Gujarat's Deputy Chief Minister, Harsh Sanghvi, detailed the state's new Uniform Civil Code (UCC), positioning it as a law for gender justice. Following Uttarakhand, Gujarat has become the second state to pass a UCC bill, which aims to create a common legal framework for marriage, divorce, and succession for all communities. Sanghvi, who also manages the Home, Police, and Transport portfolios, noted that the legislation was drafted after the Justice Ranjana Desai Committee reviewed over 20 lakh public suggestions. Key provisions include the mandatory registration of marriages and live-in relationships, a measure intended to protect women from fraudulent relationships. The law also grants legitimate status to children born from live-in unions and allows deserted women to claim maintenance. Sanghvi clarified that while parental notification is required for marriage registration, their consent is not. He also defended the exemption of tribal communities from the UCC's provisions.
