Jay Singh Rathore is trending on X. Who is he?

If you have been scrolling through X lately, you may have come across posts from an account named Jay Singh Rathore. Like several others online, you may have wondered who he is and why the account has suddenly attracted attention. Here is what we know so far.

Jay Singh Rathore’s X account went viral after several of his posts, which have since been deleted, left social media users intrigued. The account, created in August 2024, has 5,540 followers and features the bio: “Paradise is here.”

Several social media accounts have claimed that Jay Singh Rathore is a 16-year-old boy who had sought donations for his younger sister’s urgent eye surgery, saying she was at risk of losing her eyesight. What initially appeared to be an appeal from a teenager seeking help for his sister has since come under scrutiny, with some people who donated to the fundraiser questioning whether they were misled.

Jay’s first post featured an image of an Aadhaar card along with payment details as he appealed to people to contribute towards his sister’s treatment.

Within 24 hours, he claimed to have raised enough money and shared a screenshot showing that Rs 1,58,282 had been collected. He later said he had deleted his posts because he had received sufficient donations and did not want people to contribute any further.

The claims surrounding the fundraiser were subsequently discussed extensively on X after the medical documents shared with Jay’s appeal were examined by Shroff Eye Centre, which he had identified as the hospital treating his sister.

The eye centre shared screenshots of the appeal and the medical documents on Instagram and issued a warning, writing, "It has come to our knowledge that some person has created a fake patient, prescription and estimate sheet on our letterheads and is asking NGOs and individuals on WhatsApp for help. Please be aware and SHARE to prevent people from becoming victims of this deception."

The development prompted several people who had donated to the fundraiser to confront the teenager during X Spaces. During one such interaction, he admitted that the money he had raised was actually for his father, who he said had been undergoing treatment for the past two years.

"My father never asked me to beg for money, this was my own decision. I used my father's details but did not get any reach from it," he said.

Several videos from X Spaces showed Jay breaking down while people questioned him about the fundraiser. Those who had donated sought answers about why the appeal had presented the money as being needed for his sister's eye surgery when he later said the funds were actually for his father's treatment.

The episode also left the donors facing uncertainty over the money they had sent. While Jay acknowledged during X Spaces interactions that the funds had been collected for his father, the people who contributed to the appeal are yet to get their money back.

With the eye centre itself warning that the patient, prescription and estimate documents circulating in its name were fake, the fundraiser has raised questions among the donors who believed they were contributing towards a child's medical treatment.

In a tweet Jay Singh Rathore shared on September 23, he wrote, "Guys, I’m saying this again - I’ll return everyone’s money. There’s just a temporary bank limit on my account right now. Please wait until tonight. I’m not going anywhere, and I’m not running away with anyone’s money. Just have a little more patience, please."
