I settled Pakistan-India war: Trump repeats claim, says Pak PM thanked him

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday again claimed credit for settling the India-Pakistan conflict last year, naming the two countries among eight wars he said he had helped resolve during his address to the UN General Assembly.

Trump said Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had thanked him for his role in stopping the conflict and credited him with saving 30 million lives. India, however, has consistently rejected Trump's claim of US mediation, maintaining that the understanding to halt hostilities was reached through direct talks between the two countries' Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs).

“Since I took office, it has been my great honour to settle eight wars, and in so doing, become friendly with the leaders of many of those countries,” Trump said during his address to the General Debate of the 81st session of the UNGA.

“Among them, terms of settlement, Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, Pakistan and India, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and of course the war in Gaza,” he said.

Trump said he was able to make the settlements through what he described as his “very special relationships”, as well as trade, the use and threat of tariffs and other measures depending on the country involved.

TRUMP SAYS PAKISTAN PM THANKED HIM

Trump said leaders of the countries involved had sent him letters thanking him for his role in ending their conflicts.

“The Prime Minister of Pakistan, terrific man, said that Donald Trump was responsible for saving 30 million lives and probably many more than that,” he said.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that he helped broker the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan since May 2025, when he announced that the two countries had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire after what he described as a “long night” of talks.

India has consistently maintained that the understanding was reached through direct communication between the military leaderships of the two countries and has denied any third-party intervention.

Trump made a similar claim during his UN General Assembly address last year, saying he had helped stop the India-Pakistan conflict.

Trump also said his administration was working closely with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine to end the war between the two countries.

“We will get that one done. It's going to happen, I think, more quickly than people understand,” he said.

Trump also referred to a new law named after Republican Senator Lindsey Graham that he said had given him significant new tariff powers.

“If necessary, I will use them,” Trump said.

TRUMP WARNS IRAN

Trump used a major part of his UN address to defend the US war with Iran and warned that he could “annihilate” the Islamic Republic if a deal was not reached.

“Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before, maybe one of the greatest in the Middle East or even the world?” Trump asked.

“Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic, and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again?”

Trump then asked whether he should “drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations”.

He nevertheless said he believed the US and Iran would reach a deal after the November 3 midterm elections.

“But I believe we'll make a deal right after the election, because it doesn't make sense for them not to,” Trump said, claiming Iran was waiting to see how Republicans perform in the midterms.

“What they don't realise is that I'm not running. I did that already, and won in a landslide,” he added.

Trump also said his administration would not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.

The Iranian delegation walked out of the General Assembly hall as Trump criticised Tehran during his speech.
