US President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned that countries providing any financial or logistical support to Iran would face “tremendous economic consequences” as Washington prepares what he described as the most severe economic campaign ever imposed on a country.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the US would launch an unprecedented campaign of economic warfare and isolation against Iran, while urging American allies to support Washington in cutting Tehran off from international financial and commercial lifelines.

TRUMP WARNS IRAN'S SUPPORTERS

“ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences,” Trump said.

He did not name any country or specify what penalties Washington would impose on governments, companies or financial institutions that continue dealing with Iran.

Trump specifically warned against oil smuggling, financial swap arrangements, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and the use of front companies to support Iran.

'ECONOMIC WARFARE AND ISOLATION'

Trump said Iran had been given multiple opportunities to reach a deal with his administration but had failed to take them.

“No one has given the Islamic Republic of Iran a greater opportunity to make a Deal than me,” Trump said, adding that Tehran had “failed to take it.”

He described the measures as “economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale” and called on US allies to join Washington in isolating Iran.

TRUMP REPEATS NUCLEAR WARNING

In the post, Trump also claimed that Iran's military capabilities had been severely weakened, alleging that its navy had been destroyed, its air force crippled and military factories reduced to rubble.

He said Iran's economy was under severe strain and argued that the new measures would further restrict Tehran's ability to operate internationally.

“These HISTORIC MEASURES will cripple them and their ability to project terror worldwide,” Trump said.

He ended the post by reiterating his administration's position on Iran's nuclear programme: “IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON.”
