Watch: Baltimore bridge collapse timeline before ship collision

On March 26, 2024, at approximately 1.26 am, the Dali, a large 948-foot-long container ship operated by Singapore-based Grace Ocean Private Ltd., left port from Baltimore Harbor, embarking on a month-long journey to Colombo, Sri Lanka.

However, minutes before 1.30 am, the ship experienced a significant issue when its power failed, rendering it unable to maintain control or avoid obstacles. As a result, the vessel drifted towards a support pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, carrying Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland, and spanning the Patapsco River.

At 1.28 am, the ship, moving at around 9 miles per hour, collided with the bridge's support pillar, promptly triggering the structure's collapse into the river below. This unfortunate event led to the plunge of construction workers and vehicles traversing the bridge into the Patapsco River. In anticipation of the impending catastrophe, the ship's crew issued a mayday call at 1.26 am, enabling law enforcement to prevent additional vehicles from entering the bridge prior to its collapse.

JNU and Jamia Face Fresh Row Over Umar Khalid, Naxalbari and Kashmir Graffiti

A major political controversy has erupted following the appearance of controversial graffiti across university campuses in the national capital. At Jawaharlal Nehru University, slogans demanding the release of Umar Khalid and hailing Naxalbari surfaced on walls, alongside alleged objectionable text near a portrait of Veer Savarkar. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad accused left-wing student outfits of defacing campus property and disrupting the academic environment, demanding strict action. The JNU administration confirmed an internal inquiry and stated that attempts to disturb campus peace would not be tolerated. This row follows similar tensions at Jamia Millia Islamia, where slogans supporting Sharjeel Imam and demanding 'Free Kashmir' appeared amid protests calling for the reinstatement of student union elections. While the Jamia administration accused political leaders of trespassing and inciting unrest, the opposition denied raising anti-national slogans, accusing the ruling party of deliberate provocation.
