In an exclusive interview, Japanese national Hirotoshi Tanaka reflected on his 19-day detention in Bengaluru Central Prison following an altercation at a language school in RT Nagar in 2019. Recounting the argument with the school principal over cancelled classes, Tanaka admitted, "I lost my temper, and I punched him in the face." Despite being charged under bailable offenses, he was remanded to judicial custody without a warrant, leading to a long legal battle that eventually yielded a Rs 75,000 compensation from the Karnataka government. Describing his unexpected experience behind bars, Tanaka noted that "the most impressive and surreal thing was kindness of criminals and police officers," adding that fellow inmates and prison superintendents helped him with daily supplies and bail arrangements. Tanaka, who married an Indian national, shared that he is currently trying to remove his name from the blacklist to re-enter India.

Health authorities across India have raised an alert as H1N1 seasonal flu cases climb during the post-monsoon period. Delhi has recorded 1,777 H1N1 cases this year out of nearly 2,392 influenza A cases, with Karnataka reporting over 4,200 cases. Rising numbers have also been flagged in Kerala and Maharashtra. ICMR scientists confirmed that no new H1N1 strain is behind the surge, noting that the virus follows its typical twice-a-year seasonal pattern between July and October. The central government has reviewed Delhi's preparedness, including hospital bed availability, oxygen supply, critical care capacity, and medicine stocks. High-risk groups such as young children, pregnant women, and adults over 65 with comorbidities are advised to take precautions as festive gatherings commence. Retail onion prices have increased by 45 percent compared to last year and 19 percent from the previous month, triggering a political clash ahead of the festive season. The Congress party slammed the central government over skyrocketing price rise and took an 'achhe din' jibe. In response, the government clarified that onion prices experience a typical seasonal increase during August and September due to festive demand, weather, and supply chain conditions. Asserting that onion availability in the country remains sufficient, the government announced it is releasing onions in controlled quantities from buffer stocks to curb price fluctuations, with transportation and release starting from Nashik on August 24.

Ahead of the festive season, sugar prices in India are witnessing an increase, forcing the country to import raw sugar despite having adequate buffer stocks according to the Indian Sugar Mills Association. The surge is attributed to global supply tightening from Brazil, El Niño impacts on sugarcane farming, and festive demand from Raksha Bandhan to Diwali. While ISMA denies that ethanol production is responsible for the price rise, blaming market sentiment and bulk buying, supply gaps persist. Additionally, onion prices are also rising as consumer inflation impacts domestic markets before fresh sugarcane arrivals in October.
