India-China Relations: Border Peace, Trade Push And Strategic Reset In Focus

Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in New Delhi to attend the BRICS summit and participate in a high-stakes bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Bharat Mandapam. This marks President Xi's first visit to India since the 2020 Galwan clash. A multi-layered security grid has been established across the national capital, deploying SWAT teams, ground snipers, counter-drone mechanisms, and air defence systems alongside advance Chinese security details. Accompanied by a delegation of more than 400 members, the Chinese President is slated to engage in discussions focusing on Line of Actual Control matters, border normalisation, trade, economy, investments, and the resumption of direct India-China flight operations following a six-year disruption.

At Hyderabad House in New Delhi, bilateral discussions were held between India and visiting leaders ahead of the BRICS summit. Engagements with delegations from the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, and Malaysia focused on expanding trade, energy cooperation, defence procurement, and personnel training. Ethiopia welcomed investments from Indian mining companies, while discussions with Malaysia highlighted cooperation in the semiconductor sector. These bilateral meetings form part of the broader diplomatic outreach to strengthen partnerships across the Global South. Additionally, the upcoming bilateral engagement with the Chinese leadership is anticipated to focus on trade and areas of convergence following border tensions and diplomatic discussions between national security representatives. The summit brings global leaders together in New Delhi, highlighting economic resilience, trade routes, and strategic cooperation across multiple multilateral forums.

In a discussion on India's diplomatic role during the BRICS summit, former diplomat Anil Trigunayat analysed India's bilateral relations amid ongoing regional conflicts. He highlighted India's comprehensive strategic partnership with the UAE, noting close bilateral trade, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor leg, and significant personal rapport between the leaderships. Addressing ties with Iran, Trigunayat outlined the civilisational relationship while pointing out challenges such as unilateral sanctions, attacks on maritime shipping, and disruptions to energy and fertiliser supplies. He emphasised the strategic significance of the Chabahar Port, the International North-South Transport Corridor, and the vital necessity of securing freedom of navigation through critical sea lanes, which handle an overwhelming majority of India's maritime trade.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has arrived in New Delhi representing the UAE President for bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The high-level meeting follows PM Modi's engagements with leaders from Ethiopia and Malaysia. Key discussions between India and the UAE will focus on energy supplies, trade, artificial intelligence, financial cooperation, education, and tourism. The bilateral dialogue also addresses regional security amid the West Asia crisis and the safety of Indian seafarers alongside the UAE's participation in the BRICS framework.
