PM Modi to Meet Putin, Xi and Pezeshkian as Delhi Hosts 18th BRICS Summit

India and China are heading into a crucial bilateral summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping, marking their first major summit years after the Mahabalipuram meeting. Ahead of the bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the eighteenth BRICS summit in New Delhi, discussions focus on stabilizing ties through border management and high-level dialogue. Key developments include maintaining peace and tranquility along the Line of Actual Control, establishing military hotlines in the eastern and middle sectors, resuming transborder river data sharing, and facilitating the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Negotiations between special representatives are scheduled to continue in twenty twenty-seven to address boundary questions. Despite progress on disengagement at friction points and restored patrolling arrangements, several bilateral challenges persist. These include the unresolved boundary dispute, military trust deficit, trade deficit, access to rare earth minerals and technology, concerns over transborder river infrastructure, and strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific region. Both sides maintain diplomatic and military communication channels to prevent local border incidents from escalating.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting in New Delhi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit. This marks the Chinese President's first visit to India in seven years, following the 2019 informal summit in Mamallapuram and the subsequent 2020 Galwan Valley standoff along the Line of Actual Control. The discussions are expected to touch upon the border situation following agreements reached during National Security Advisor Ajit Doval's Beijing visit, along with economic concerns such as the bilateral trade deficit and market access for critical components.

Addressing the inaugural session of the BRICS Business Forum on the eve of the BRICS Summit, the External Affairs Minister highlighted twenty years of institutionalised BRICS cooperation. Speaking on the evolution of the grouping in membership, agenda, and mechanisms, the address emphasised India's chairship theme centered on building resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability amid global economic churn, geopolitical conflicts, pandemics, and climate disruptions. The forum brought together enterprises across sectors to explore commercial opportunities, supply chain connectivity, trade facilitation, services, agriculture, agri-technology, digital delivery, MSMEs, startups, and women-led enterprises. The address noted that higher economic security entails greater self-reliance, genuine market practices, predictable business environments, and transparent trade and investment. Major technological opportunities such as digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence, fintech, and advanced manufacturing were also outlined, alongside initiatives like the BRICS Incubator network and the BRICS Startup Innovation Fund to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
