A 34-year-old man allegedly hacked to death his mother, grandmother and maternal uncle before dying by suicide here on Saturday, police said.

The incident occurred at Kottigepalya under the Kamakshipalya Police Station limits, they said.

According to police, the accused, Prashant, a driver, allegedly attacked his mother, Mangalamma (55), a garment factory worker, his grandmother Nanjamma and his maternal uncle Satish with a machete at their residence.

In its statement, police had earlier said that Satish was Prashant's brother-in-law but after preliminary inquiry, it was revealed that he was actually his mother's brother and was unmarried.

However, no death note was recovered from the spot.

Citing a preliminary investigation, a senior police officer said Prashant was reportedly suffering from mental health issues.

Police said the incident happened after Prashant's father, Chikkanna, left for work in the morning.

After allegedly killing the three family members, he died by suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan inside the house, he said.

Speaking to reporters here, Yatheesh N, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru West Division, said that at around 8.30 to 9 am, Kamakshipalya police received information regarding the incident.

According to him, neighbours alerted police after hearing suspicious sounds from the house.

"When they (police) checked, they found two bodies lying near the entrance and another person hanging inside the house. Police also found the body of another woman. All the deceased had injuries consistent with assault by a sharp weapon," he said.

Preliminary findings suggest that Prashant died by suicide while the other three were murdered, he said.

The investigation is at a preliminary stage, and further investigation is underway, he said.

Speaking to reporters here, Prashant's father Chikkanna, said he was shocked to receive a phone call about the incident and couldn't believe that his son killed his family members.

"There had been no argument in the family on Friday night. We all had meals together. I left for work as usual in the morning at around 6 am. I don't know what happened after that." He claimed that his son Prashant was mentally sound and was perfectly fine.

"There was no quarrel or disturbance at home. I don't know why he did this," he added.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to ascertain the exact sequence of events and the motive behind the incident.
