Delhi CM sets one-month deadline for coaching centres to meet safety norms
Rekha Gupta has given Delhi coaching centres one month to meet fire and safety norms. The warning follows recent fire incidents, with non-compliant institutes facing sealing and a new law being prepared.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday gave coaching centres across the national capital one month to comply with mandatory fire and safety norms, warning that non-compliant institutes would face strict action, including the sealing of their premises.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over student safety following a series of fire incidents and the recent commercial building blaze in Lucknow that claimed 15 lives. The building had an animation centre, a pet shop and a coaching centre which caught fire during the incident.
In a video message released on Saturday, Gupta made it clear that the number of coaching institutes operating in Delhi was not the government's concern, but the safety of students studying in them.
"One month. That is the deadline," Gupta said.
"The number of coaching institutes in Delhi is not the issue. The safety and security of our children is."
ONE-MONTH DEADLINE FOR COMPLIANCE
The chief minister said all coaching institutes in Delhi must obtain the required fire safety audits and install mandatory safety equipment while ensuring compliance with prescribed safety standards.
"Any coaching institute without a fire audit, mandatory safety equipment or prescribed safety measures will face strict action, including sealing, if it fails to comply within one month," she said.
Addressing coaching centre operators directly, Gupta said, "All the coaching institutes running in Delhi, be it 900 or 1,000, the number doesn't matter. What matters is the lives of the children studying there, their safety and security."
She added that the government would not compromise on student safety under any circumstances.
STUDENTS ASKED TO REPORT UNSAFE INSTITUTES
Gupta also urged students and parents to report any coaching institute that lacks adequate safety arrangements.
"Students are urged to report any unsafe coaching institute by message, email or phone. Every complaint will be acted upon. No compromise with the safety of our children," she said.
According to the chief minister, every complaint received by the government will be investigated and acted upon.
Alongside the enforcement drive, the Delhi government is preparing a comprehensive regulatory framework aimed at bringing coaching institutes under stricter oversight.
Gupta said a robust law would soon be introduced to strengthen accountability and ensure higher safety standards across the sector.
Earlier this week, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood ordered a citywide safety inspection of coaching centres and said a new regulatory mechanism for such establishments was being prepared.
