Lucknow has always been a multicultural city that flourished as a North Indian cultural and artistic hub, and the seat of power of Nawabs in the 18th and 19th centuries. The city stands at an elevation of approximately 123 metres (404 ft) above sea level. Lucknow city has an area of 402 sq km.
Historically, Lucknow was the capital of the Awadh region, controlled by the Delhi Sultanate and later the Mughal Empire. It was transferred to the Nawabs of Awadh. In 1856, the British East India Company abolished local rule and took complete control of the city along with the rest of Awadh and, in 1857, transferred it to the British Raj. The history of Lucknow can be traced back to the ancient times of the Suryavanshi Dynasty. It is said that Lakshmana, who was the brother of Lord Rama, laid the foundation of the ancient city. This was near the Gomti River on an elevated piece of land. It was then called Lakshmanpur.
Lucknow was considered one of the great centres of Muslim culture. The classical Indian dance form Kathak originated from Lucknow. It is known for embroidery works including chikankari, zari, zardozi, kamdani and gota making.
Lucknow is also known for its chaats, street food, kulfi, paan and sweets. Nahari, a dish prepared using mutton, is popular among non-vegetarians. Sheermal is a type of sweet bread (paratha) prepared in Lucknow. Makkhan-malai is another sweet delicacy of Lucknow made and sold only during winters. Lucknow has a total of only 5.66 percent of forest cover, which is much less than the state average of around 7 percent. Lucknow is also among the top cities of India by GDP.

The Allahabad High Court has rejected the bail plea of Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, chief of the Ittehad Millet Council, in connection with the Bareilly violence case. The Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration busted a counterfeit medicine supply network running from Saharanpur to Lucknow. The Lucknow Municipal Corporation has initiated bulldozer action against illegal lawyers' chambers constructed through encroachment on government land, drains, and roads in Lucknow. The demolition drive follows an order from the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court, after no relief was granted to the lawyers by the Supreme Court. Authorities disconnected power supply in the area prior to commencing the action. A Hindu activist, Dhirendra Pratap Singh, was found dead with bullet wounds in a canal in the Dubagga area of Lucknow after being missing for two days. Preliminary investigations by Lucknow Police suggest he was killed inside his Fortuner SUV before his body was dumped in the canal. A bank employee in Lucknow killed his estranged wife outside an ICICI Bank branch in Gomti Nagar during ongoing divorce proceedings. CCTV footage captured the assault and shooting outside the bank premises. Following the incident, the accused posted a WhatsApp status confessing to the crime and alleging infidelity. He subsequently returned to his residence, killed his sister, and died by suicide. Police recovered the bodies from the house, where music was found playing in the background.
