Don't spread misinformation: Cops to Kejriwal over crackdown on protesters remark
Delhi Police asked Arvind Kejriwal to stop circulating what it called misleading claims about a possible crackdown on protesters at Jantar Mantar. The response came after Kejriwal flagged heavy security, ambulance presence and early shop closures in Connaught Place.
Delhi Police on Thursday asked Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal to refrain from spreading "misleading" and "unverified" information after he questioned the heightened security arrangements in Connaught Place and suggested that the Centre could launch a crackdown on protesters at Jantar Mantar.
In a post on X, Delhi Police said, "There is no plan of Delhi police to crack down on the ongoing protest tonight as is being conveyed. You are advised to refrain from spreading or circulating any misleading/ unverified information."
The police response came after Kejriwal raised questions over the security deployment in the national capital.
In a post on X, Kejriwal said, "Orders to close all shops in Connaught Place by 6:30 PM this evening. Intense security. Piles of ambulances. Will the Modi government once again brutally attack its own children at Jantar Mantar today?"
Kejriwal questioned the Centre over the heightened security arrangements in Connaught Place, asking whether the Modi government would "once again brutally attack its own children" at Jantar Mantar.
The New Delhi Traders Association (NDTA) issued an urgent advisory directing all shops, offices and restaurants in Connaught Place to close by 6:30 pm on July 23, 2026. The association said it issued the advisory following telephonic advice from the NDMC Chairman and Vice Chairman in view of a "critical situation" in the area.
According to the advisory circular, the NDTA requested all establishment owners to comply with the directions to avoid any unpleasant situation to themselves or their property.
"As advised by the Chairman NDMC and Vice Chairman NDMC, telephonically, looking at the critical situation around CP, it has been strictly advised that all shops and establishments, including offices and restaurants, in Connaught Place, New Delhi, shall close for the day by 6.30 pm today, that is 23.07.2026. All establishment owners/occupiers are requested to cooperate and ensure strict compliance with the above directions to avoid any unpleasant situation and save yourself from any loss of property and injury," the advisory circular said.
The developments come amid the ongoing youth protests led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak controversy that impacted lakhs of students across the country.
Earlier in the day, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced the temporary closure of 16 metro stations from 7:30 am until further orders as a precautionary measure amid the ongoing student protests in the national capital.
According to a post on X by the DMRC, the affected stations are Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Barakhambha Road, Supreme Court, Seva Teerth, Janpath, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, ITO, Delhi Gate, Indraprastha, Khan Market, Jor Bagh and Shivaji Stadium.
While entry and exit at these stations remain suspended until further instructions, interchange facilities continue to be available at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House and Central Secretariat.
