Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has formally requested Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to declare the 8.8-kilometre-long Mandi Road in South Delhi a National Highway and entrust its development to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

In a letter to Gadkari, Gupta said the move would facilitate the road's integrated development, ensure better engineering standards and enable time-bound infrastructure upgrades.

Mandi Road connects NH-148A (Mehrauli-Gurugram Road) near Chhatarpur Metro Station with the Gurugram-Faridabad Road at the Delhi-Haryana border. The Chief Minister described it as a "strategically important corridor" linking Delhi, Gurugram and Faridabad, playing a key role in facilitating inter-state traffic across the National Capital Region (NCR).

Gupta also noted that the proposal to widen and comprehensively develop Mandi Road had received support during the 68th meeting of the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning & Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) held on September 27, 2023.

According to Rekha Gupta, declaring the stretch a National Highway and transferring it to the NHAI would strengthen connectivity across Delhi-NCR, ease travel for daily commuters and contribute to regional economic growth.

Speaking on the issue, Gupta said the presence of BJP governments at both the Centre and in Delhi had created a favourable environment for executing major infrastructure projects.

"There has never been a better time for Delhi. It is now easier to work on all issues, and this is a positive sign for the entire city. Our responsibility is to provide better facilities to the people of Delhi," she said.

The Chief Minister also criticised the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government, alleging that it had failed to undertake key development works. She claimed that the city's garbage landfill sites had been reduced and said her government remained committed to achieving all its development targets with the support of the party.

If approved, the proposal is expected to improve road connectivity between Delhi, Gurugram and Faridabad while easing traffic movement on one of South Delhi's key arterial routes.
