ITR-7 Excel utility for AY 2026-27 goes live on income tax portal
With the utility now live, eligible taxpayers can download it, fill in the required information offline, validate the details, generate a JSON file and upload it on the Income Tax e-Filing portal to complete the return filing process.

As the income tax return (ITR) filing season gathers pace, the Income Tax Department is gradually making more return filing utilities available. The latest addition is the Excel Utility for ITR-7, allowing eligible taxpayers to prepare their returns offline before uploading them to the e-filing portal.
The utility has been released for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27, corresponding to the Financial Year 2025-26.
INCOME TAX DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES ITR-7 EXCEL UTILITY
The Income Tax Department announced the launch of the offline utility through a post on X.
"Kind Attention Taxpayers! The Excel Utility for ITR-7 for Assessment Year 2026-27 is now available on the Income Tax e-Filing portal," the department said.
With the utility now live, eligible taxpayers can download it, fill in the required information offline, validate the details, generate a JSON file and upload it on the Income Tax e-Filing portal to complete the return filing process.
WHO CAN FILE ITR-7?
ITR-7 is not meant for individual salaried taxpayers. It is designed for specific categories of entities that are required to file returns under certain provisions of the Income-tax Act.
The form can be used by persons, including companies, that are required to furnish returns under Sections 139(4A), 139(4B), 139(4C) and 139(4D).
These include charitable and religious trusts, political parties, scientific research institutions, universities, colleges and certain other educational institutions that are required to file their income tax returns under the relevant provisions of the law.
According to ClearTax, firms, companies, associations of persons (AOPs), local authorities and artificial juridical persons falling under these sections are also eligible to use ITR-7 where applicable.
The Income Tax Department has also clarified that from Assessment Year 2022-23 onwards, ITR-7 is not applicable to persons whose income is unconditionally exempt under Section 10 and who are not required to file a return under Section 139.
HOW DOES THE OFFLINE FILING PROCESS WORK?
Using the Excel Utility, taxpayers can fill in and validate their return offline before submitting it through the e-filing portal.
After downloading the utility from the Income Tax e-Filing portal, users can enter their details, validate the information and generate a JSON file. This file can then be uploaded to the e-filing portal to submit the return.
The offline utility is especially useful for organisations and institutions that prefer preparing their returns separately before uploading the final version online.
Meanwhile, the due date for filing income tax returns for individual taxpayers remains July 31, 2026.
For taxpayers covered under non-audit business cases, the deadline is August 31, 2026, while businesses whose accounts require an audit must file their returns by October 31, 2026.
Entities that are required to furnish transfer pricing reports for international or specified domestic transactions have time until November 30, 2026, to complete their return filing.
With the ITR-7 Excel Utility now available, eligible trusts, institutions and other organisations can begin preparing their returns well before the applicable deadline, helping them avoid last-minute filing pressure.
