According to officials, the incident occurred around 12.40 pm in the Naupada locality of Kurla West, where Yunus Kundawala sustained critical injuries after being struck by a falling tree.

Following the incident, BMC teams reached the spot and carried out trimming and removal of the fallen tree.

At least four people have died in Mumbai so far as heavy rainfall and strong winds continue to batter India’s financial capital, despite the monsoon arriving later than usual this year.

The city has been witnessing persistent downpours since the beginning of the week, leading to multiple rain-related incidents and disruption across several areas.

In a separate incident a few kilometres away from where the 63-year-old man died in Kurla West, strong winds and heavy rain uprooted another tree in Bandra East, damaging several parked vehicles. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

In yet another development from the same area, a tree collapsed just ahead of an industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s security convoy, briefly disrupting traffic movement. Police said the situation was quickly brought under control, while BMC teams cleared the obstruction and restored traffic.

TREE FALLS, OPEN MANHOLES KILL 4 IN MUMBAI

Trees falling on unsuspecting pedestrians have become a recurring monsoon hazard in Mumbai, with multiple fatalities reported across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in recent days.

Prior to the death of Kundawala, two other people were killed in similar incidents. On June 30, an 11-year-old boy died after a peepal tree collapsed onto a school bus in Mumbai. In another case in Mira-Bhayandar, a man was killed when a tree suddenly fell on him.

Apart from tree-related incidents, open manholes have also emerged as a major safety concern during heavy rains. On July 2, a 55-year-old man died after falling into an open sewer manhole in Sakinaka while walking to work in heavy rainfall.

According to BMC officials, a private civic contractor had removed the manhole cover for drain cleaning and installation of protective grilles but allegedly left the site unsecured without adequate warning, leading to the fatal accident.
